Profit Factor in trading: formula and interpretation
Profit Factor compares the total gross profit with the total gross loss in a defined sample of trades. Divide gross profit by gross loss expressed as a positive number. It describes an observed outcome; on its own, it neither measures risk nor predicts the next period.
Reading the result
A value of 1 means gross gains and losses are equal. Above 1, gross gains exceed gross losses within this sample; below 1, the reverse is true. Include fees and slippage when you need a result closer to your net outcome. Record the period, trade count and any change in position size so comparisons remain meaningful.
NQ and MNQ futures example
Suppose three trades gain 30 points each and two lose 20 points each, always using one contract. That is 90 winning points and 40 losing points. For NQ ($20 per point), gross profit is $1,800 and gross loss is $800; for MNQ ($2 per point), they are $180 and $80. Profit Factor is 2.25 in both cases before fees. Contract size changes the dollar amount, not the ratio in this example.

Common mistakes
Ignoring costs
A small edge before costs may disappear after fees and slippage. Use the same cost convention across samples.
Trusting a tiny sample
One large trade can dominate the ratio. Check sample size and concentration of results.
Overlooking drawdown
Profit Factor does not show how deep or long an equity decline was.
Frequently asked questions
What is the Profit Factor formula?
Gross profit divided by gross loss expressed as a positive value, for a defined sample of trades.
Does a Profit Factor above 1 guarantee future profit?
No. It only describes past results in the sample. Costs, changing market conditions and sample size can alter the interpretation.
What if there are no losing trades?
The denominator is zero and the ratio is not finite. It should not be presented as a stable performance figure.
Can I calculate it by model or account?
Yes. Filter trades by model, account or period, using the same cost and classification rules in every comparison.
