NQ futures trading hours: sessions, local times and the best time to trade
NQ futures trade on CME Globex from Sunday 6:00 p.m. to Friday 5:00 p.m. ET, with a daily break from 5:00 to 6:00 p.m. ET. The Nasdaq cash session opens at 9:30 a.m. ET. There is no universal best time to trade NQ. The New York cash open at 9:30 a.m. ET, some economic releases at 8:30 a.m. ET, and the cash close at 4:00 p.m. ET are useful points to watch for changes in market activity and volatility. Your own window depends on your strategy, costs, risk and trading records; more movement does not mean better results.
Liquidity, releases and volatility
The U.S. cash open and close attract attention and order flow, and the futures market can react to both. Some widely followed economic reports are released at 8:30 a.m. ET; CME has documented changes in equity futures volume around those releases. This is about market activity, not a profitable time slot. Check the economic calendar, spreads and your actual fills before choosing when to trade.
NQ futures versus the Nasdaq cash market
CME Globex lists NQ from Sunday 6:00 p.m. ET through Friday 5:00 p.m. ET, with daily maintenance from 5:00 to 6:00 p.m. ET. Nasdaq regular cash trading runs from 9:30 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. ET, Monday through Friday. These are different markets and schedules: futures can trade outside cash hours. Check holidays, early closes and any further halts with CME and Nasdaq.

Reference date: Wednesday, September 30, 2026 in ET (EDT, UTC−4); the Tokyo cash session falls on Thursday, October 1. “+1” denotes the next calendar day. Tokyo has a 22:30–23:30 ET lunch break (11:30–12:30 JST); its exchange hours are one reference for Asia, not official hours for every Asian market or a guarantee of NQ liquidity. London is on BST on this date. Chile means Santiago, not Easter Island; Aysén and Magallanes stay on UTC−3 year-round.
How the offsets change in 2026
New York switches to EDT on March 8 and back to EST on November 1. Mainland Spain changes on March 29 and October 25; during the intervening mismatch weeks, the Nasdaq cash open is 2:30 p.m. in Spain, versus 3:30 p.m. at other times. Santiago switches to winter time after Saturday, April 4 and back to summer time after Saturday, September 5; Aysén and Magallanes do not switch. Mexico City has no seasonal change under the 2022 law (northern border areas differ); Colombia remains UTC−5 and Argentina UTC−3. Their offsets to ET still change with New York: Mexico City sees the cash open at 7:30 a.m. under EDT or 8:30 a.m. under EST; Colombia at 8:30 or 9:30 a.m.; Argentina at 10:30 or 11:30 a.m. Check the specific date and city before setting a trading schedule.
Find YOUR best window in your data
The dashboard’s Time Performance groups your trades into five-minute slots in New York time. Compare trade counts, outcomes and execution conditions by slot, account, model and period; a small sample cannot settle the question. Record your plan and review the pattern again after a clock change. A suitable window is a provisional reading of your own data and availability.

Common mistakes
Trading the open without a plan
Fast moves can increase slippage. Define entry, exit and maximum-loss rules before the session.
Ignoring the release calendar
An 8:30 a.m. ET release can change activity before the cash open. Check the day’s schedule.
Keeping a fixed local start time
The U.S., Spain and Chile change clocks on different dates. Recalculate after each change.
Frequently asked questions
What is the best time to trade NQ?
There is no universal window. Watch the 9:30 a.m. ET cash open, possible 8:30 a.m. releases and the 4:00 p.m. close; then compare your own trades, costs and risk by time slot.
Does NQ close when the Nasdaq stock market closes?
No. The Nasdaq regular cash session closes at 4:00 p.m. ET, while NQ can continue on CME Globex until the daily 5:00–6:00 p.m. ET maintenance break, subject to the official calendar.
What time does Nasdaq open in mainland Spain?
Usually at 3:30 p.m. Between the U.S. and European spring clock changes, and between the European and U.S. autumn changes, it opens at 2:30 p.m. In 2026 the relevant dates are March 8 and 29, and October 25 and November 1.
Does the Tokyo or London open guarantee more NQ volume?
No. These sessions provide global time references, but actual NQ volume depends on the day, news and market conditions. Check the calendar and observed futures data.
